Shot of a High School
Caption: Grover Cleveland High School
(Blink 182 “All The Small Things” plays in the background”)
Cut to: Inside the High School, a corridor
Caption: Five Years Ago
(A younger Tru is putting books in her locker. A boy wearing a high school football jacket, carrying a football walks up to her)
RONNIE
Hey, Tru
TRU
Ronnie
RONNIE
Uh, Prom’s coming up
TRU
Is it?
RONNIE
Yeah, and you know, I wanted to…
(Tru waits expectantly)
TRU
Ronnie, anything you wanna tell me or, you know, ask me, you go right ahead
(Ronnie smiles, looks like he is about to speak. A dark-haired girl walks in front of him, looking at Tru. She leans against the locker)
TRU
Candace, not now. I’ll call you later, okay?
CANDACE
I’m really sorry Tru, but this can’t wait. What he’s trying to say is that he wants to go to the Prom…
(Tru smiles at Ronnie)
…with me
TRU
What?
(Ronnie looks down, doesn’t say anything)
Candace, how could you do this to me? We’re best friends
CANDACE
Tru, high school’s nearly over and everyone knows that high school friendships don’t last. So why would I let a friendship that’s probably gonna end anyway, get in the way of something I want?
(Tru looks shocked. Candace takes Ronnie’s hand, he looks uncomfortable)
Try not to take it so hard. Thing’s change
(She walks off down the corridor, taking Ronnie with her)
See ya
INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Tru wakes up, she has been asleep in front of the computer. Davis is in the crypt, working on a dead male’s body)
TRU
Oh, thank God
(She looks down at her hand, she is holding a ticket to a Five Year Reunion at Grover Cleveland High School)
DAVIS (coming in)
Did you nod off?
(He notices the ticket)
What’s this? High School Reunion, you going to this?
TRU
Go back to High School? Absolutely…
(She picks it up and puts it in the wastebasket)
…not.

2. INT. Standard Diner Café. DAY.
LINDSAY
I can’t believe you. How many more times are you gonna say you’re not coming to the reunion tonight, Tru? I mean, it’ll be fun
TRU
Lindsay…
LINDSAY
Okay, for the last time, you are coming even if I have to drag you there myself
(Camera pans out to reveal Luc is sitting next to Tru)
LUC
You can try, but I’m warning you, my girl’s stubborn
(Camera pans the other way to reveal Harrison is sitting next to Lindsay)
HARRISON
Yeah, come on. I’m going
TRU
Harrison, you weren’t even in our class
HARRISON
I was two years behind. Oh, and uh, Lindsay’s taking me as her date (he kisses her cheek)
TRU
Good. Go. Have fun, and you can tell me all about it tomorrow
(She walks away towards the cash register)
HARRISON
Aww
LINDSAY (to Luc)
Is she okay?
LUC
Guess I’ll go find out
(He follows after Tru)
LINDSAY
So, just out of curiosity, did you have friends in our class?
HARRISON
Well not five years ago…but now, I have you
LINDSAY
Mmm
(Camera pans over to Luc and Tru)
LUC
Did I miss something back there?
TRU
I just don’t wanna go to my high school reunion is all
LUC
That bad?
TRU
Parts of it. Parts of it were great. I’m just not so keen on reliving it
LUC
Look, I didn’t know you back then. I’m not even sure I know you now. But you’ve got a lot to be proud of, Tru. Good friends. A cool, if slightly morbid, new job. Med school’s not that far away
TRU
No, I know, its just…
LUC
Plus, you’ve got a cool new boyfriend you can take to the reunion and show off
TRU (smiling)
Really?
LUC
Yeah!
3. INT. Tru’s bedroom. NIGHT.
LINDSAY
I’m so glad you decided to come. Okay, what do you think? Too much cleavage?
TRU
Shame on you. No such thing
LINDSAY
Oh, you know what you should wear? You should wear those pinstripe pants you got downtown
TRU
Definitely
(She walks across to the closet)
Oh, you know what? Meredith borrowed them like two months ago and left them at the dry cleaners. All she left me was this ticket
LINDSAY
How is Meredith anyway?
TRU
Good. Rehab’s going well. She’ll be home in a few weeks
LINDSAY
Good. Well, don’t worry about tonight. I’ll pick something out for you. Here. Start with these, we’ll build around
(She hands Tru some high-heeled strappy shoes. Tru sits down on the bed to put them on. Lindsay sits next to her)
LINDSAY (cont’d)
Hey, do you remember Craig Burke?
TRU
Soccer goalie, total hottie. Sure
LINDSAY
I had the hugest crush on him
TRU
Yeah. You left him that note
LINDSAY
Told him everything about how I felt, put it in his locker, waited for him to do something
TRU
And what did he do?
LINDSAY
Nothing. He just, never even responded. God, I think about that all the time. You think he’ll be there tonight?
TRU
One way to find out
LINDSAY
Yes, yes, yes
(They both stand up and parade in front of the full-length mirror)
Cut to: High School building, Night
4. INT. High School. NIGHT
(Tru and Luc, and Lindsay and Harrison, arm in arm, walk down the corridor to the registration desk)
TRU
Oh my God…I’m back in high school
LINDSAY
Just for a few hours. Just breathe. Stay strong
(Harrison, bored, sarcastically starts deep breathing)
HARRISON
All right, come on, let’s check out some snacks
LINDSAY (to Tru)
All right, okay, I’ll find you later? Just remember, breathe
(She and Harrison disappear. Tru laughs, and picks up a Reunion leaflet from the table)
CANDACE (off-screen)
Billy?
(Tru and Luc turn around)
CANDACE (cont’d)
Hi! (she hugs him) That’s a nice tie. I didn’t know people were still wearing those, you know…
(She moves away)
…In this century
(Tru and Luc walk up the steps towards the hall)
LUC
Who’s that?
TRU
Candace Aimes
LUC
You know her?
TRU
We used to be best friends
BILLY
Tru. Tru Davies
TRU
Billy. Billy Lambert, oh my God you look great, I almost didn’t recognise you. Not that you didn’t look great back in high school…
BILLY
Oh, who are you kidding? I was a pizza-faced beanpole
(Luc takes Tru’s coat and walks away to the cloakroom)
But that was then, right?
TRU
What’s been going on with you, Billy?
BILLY
I’ve developed this software that’s going to revolutionize downloading. It’ll make the MP3 player obsolete
TRU (smiling)
That’s great. Well, I’ll see you inside, okay? Bye
5. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
(Dance music plays loudly, people are dancing. Tru walks through the crowd, looking at the Reunion brochure student pictures)
MAN (off-screen)
Hey, Tru
TRU (waving)
Hey
LUC (arriving with drinks)
So how you holding up so far? Glad you came?
(An excitable blonde haired young woman appears)
JUDY
Tru! Oh my God it’s you!
(She runs over and engulfs Tru in a hug)
Judy! Judy Rogers!
TRU
Judy, of course, how could I forget. This is my boyfriend…
JUDY (speaking fast, excitedly)
Can you believe this? Everyone here in one room, it’s like we never left! Don’t you just love these reunion directories? We can totally keep tabs on everyone, I mean of course these things don’t tell the whole story, right? Like Larry Cutler, addicted to prescription painkillers!
TRU
Judy, this is…
JUDY
And Kenny Lewis – he’s gay! Did you hear about Steve Sabitzsky? He went into his father’s carpet business and fired his own dad!
TRU (to Luc)
Judy was…
JUDY
And Gillian Kaye? You noticed? Less nose, more boobs. All bought and paid for
TRU (quickly)
Judy was the captain of the swim team
LUC
Ah
JUDY
Oh, he’s adorable! Oh, honey, you traded up. I mean that Ronnie Clifton, you heard about him and Candace, right? She thinks she’s everything just because they made her Prom Queen. Of course, I had the swim team, Candace couldn’t even swim!
TRU
Judy, I see someone I have to talk to, but this has been great
JUDY
Right
LUC
Nice to meet you
(They move on. Judy smiles, breathes and moves on too)
6. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
(Lindsay bobs her head to the music, looking around. Suddenly she spots someone)
LINDSAY (to herself)
Craig…
(She walks over to him. Before she gets there, a dark-haired boy follows her)
GLENN
Hey, uh, Glenn Carpenter. Can I talk to you for a sec?
LINDSAY
Uh, later, yeah sure. Craig? Craig Burke. Hey!
CRAIG
Hey
LINDSAY
Um, this is gonna sound a little strange, but toward the end of senior year, I left a note in your locker. And, uh, you know I wrote down how I felt about you, in detail, Embarrassing detail, actually. And uh, I never got an answer, and I was just wondering…you know?
CRAIG
I never got any note. I’m sorry, what was your name again?
(Lindsay’s smile falters)
MAN (off-screen)
Craig!
CRAIG
Oh, excuse me for a second…hey dude, what’s up!
(Mortified, Lindsay walks away)
7. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
WOMAN
Voting for tonight’s reunion queen. Wanna cast your vote?
TRU
Oh yeah, hey.
(She writes on a slip)
One for Lindsay. Thanks
(The woman puts the slip in the box she is carrying)
LUC
So, what exactly was the deal with you and this Ronnie guy?
TRU
Oh, high school crush gone awry. But, you can ask him yourself. There he is
(She points him out. He waves, nervously)
LUC
I tell you what, I think I’m gonna go get you a refill instead
TRU
Oh…
(Luc moves away, leaving her no choice but to move over and talk to him)
RONNIE
Tru
TRU
Hi Ronnie, God it’s been a while. Last time I saw you, it was right around Prom time
(She laughs. Ronnie looks guilty)
RONNIE
I know it’s about five years too late but I owe you an apology. I never meant to hurt you, Tru. Candace just got what she wanted, you know. She always did
(He looks over at Candace)
Always will
TRU
You don’t sound too happy about it
RONNIE
Me? No, I’m good. I’m real good. You know, life couldn’t be any better right now
(He stares at Candace)
TRU
Well, it was real nice seeing you Ronnie
RONNIE
See ya Tru
8. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
(Harrison stands with Lindsay, looking around)
LINDSAY
What’s the matter? You looking for someone?
HARRISON (defensively)
No. Nobody
LINDSAY
Well let’s go dance or something
HARRISON
No thanks, I’m not really into the dancing thing
LINDSAY
Okay, well, do you wanna go get a drink then?
(Harrison is still looking round the room)
Hello? Earth to Harrison? What do you wanna do?
(Harrison has spotted his target)
HARRISON
I’ll be right back
(He walks away, Lindsay shakes her head)
9. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
(Tru and Luc are dancing. As he spins her round, she spots Candace talking to an older man)
TRU
Oh
LUC
Who’s that?
TRU
Mr. Connor. Oh, he was the best teacher I ever had. He was the first one who really got through to me, you know? Made me think for myself. He changed my life
LUC
So go say hi to him
TRU
It’s not that easy. Look who’s he with: Candace
LUC
Time to let bygones be bygones, Tru
(Tru sighs and they both walk over to him)
TRU
Mr Connors, hi
Mr. CONNOR
Tru Davies, I was hoping you’d be here tonight. I’m so glad you came
CANDACE
Tru
TRU
Candace
CANDACE
You look great! I could never get away with an outfit like that. You are so brave
TRU
Thanks
CANDACE
Is this your boyfriend?
(Tru lifts her hand which is entwined in Luc’s, with a smile)
CANDACE (cont’d)
We’ll give you a chance to catch up with Mr. Connor. Couldn’t deny you that
(to Luc) Come on, I’ll buy you a drink
LUC
I think they’re free
(They walk away)
(Tru smiles at her teacher and takes his hand, they begin to dance)
TRU
Mr Connor, how are you? How’s the writing? I remember how you were always gonna write the great American novel
MR CONNOR
Well, actually Tru, the writing is going surprisingly well. I am working on something that I feel so good about
(Tru is looking at Candace and Luc, they seem to be getting on well)
TRU
Great. That’s great
MR CONNOR (off Tru’s look)
Still thinking about Candace, well I guess some things haven’t changed that much in the last five years
10. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
(Keith Morgan approaches the bar. Harrison is behind him)
KEITH
How’s it going, man? Grab one of these?
BARMAN
Sure
(Harrison grabs him by the shoulders)
HARRISON
Keith!
KEITH
Hey
HARRISON
Keith Morgan!
KEITH
Hey, what’s up man?
HARRISON (gesturing to his own face)
You don’t remember me do you?
KEITH
No, can’t say that I do
(A microphone announcement can be heard: “Can I have everyone’s attention please?”)
HARRISON
Well, I’ll tell you what. How about I remind you?
KEITH (smiling)
All right
Cut to: Glenn at the microphone
GLENN
Hello? (he taps the microphone) Uh, can I have your attention please? We’ve counted all the ballots, and it is now time to announce our Class Of ’99 Five-Year Reunion Queen. Tonight our queen is…
(He opens envelope)
..Candace Aimes
(People clap and cheer and Candace makes her way to the stage. The man helps her put on the tiara)
LINDSAY
So do you know that Craig never even got my note? He doesn’t even remember me
TRU
Ouch. So much for high school memories, huh?
JUDY (coming up behind them)
Can you believe this? I can’t. It’s like a nightmare. The recurring kind
CANDACE
Wow! Thank you so much. This is such a surprise.
(Beat)
Okay, not that much of a surprise. Anyway, it’s so good seeing you all here. Some of whom I actually even remember…
KEITH (off-screen)
Hey buddy, what’s your problem? I told you I dunno who the hell you are!
(Harrison launches into him, knocking over the drinks table, both of them falling on top of it. Harrison punches him round the face and goes to punch him again, but Keith hits him back)
LUC
Harrison!
(Luc and another man drag Harrison up, his mouth is bleeding)
LINDSAY
Harrison! Oh my God, are you okay?
HARRISON
Okay? I’m great! I waited years to punch this son of a bitch!
KEITH (being held back by a man)
Now I remember you. You’re that guy whose ass I used to kick
LINDSAY
Is this what you came here for tonight? Settle some stupid high school grudge?
HARRISON (pleased with himself)
Oh yeah!
(He looks at Lindsay, who looks unimpressed)
No, I mean no. I came for you
LINDSAY
You’re unbelievable, Harrison
HARRISON
Oh, come on
(Luc leaves Harrison and walks over to Tru)
LUC
Look, he’ll be fine. But are you all right?
TRU (sarcastically)
Yeah, great
LUC
Convincing. You know, it kinda looks to me like you got Candace on the brain. Hey, if you two really were best friends, maybe now’d be the time to go talk to her. Put things to rest
(Tru kisses him, and walks off)
11. INT. Corridor. NIGHT.
(Tru walks down the corridor. She sees two girls standing at the side, drinking)
TRU
Hey, did you see where Candace went?
GIRL
I think I saw her heading to the pool
TRU
Thanks
(She walks off down the corridor)
12. INT. Pool. NIGHT.
(The pool room is dark and silent)
TRU
Candace?
(Shot of the edge of the pool, the water ripples softly)
TRU
Candace, are you in here?
(She walks further into the room, where she can see more of the pool. Suddenly, she spots Candace face down in the pool, floating)
TRU
Oh, no!
(She jumps into the pool and swims over to Candace. She reaches her, and turns her over)
Oh my God…Candace…
(Candace’s head twists to look at Tru)
CANDACE
Save me!
[Flashes of the days images as they rewind]
(Tru wakes up with a jump in the Morgue office, where she woke up the previous day)
DAVIS (coming in)
Did you nod off?
(He notices the reunion ticket)
Hey, what’s this? A high school reunion. Cool. You going to this?
TRU
Yes, I am. Again
[Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images as they rewind]
13. INT. Morgue Office. DAY.
DAVIS
Again? You’re going to your high school reunion again? So does this mean…?
TRU
My day is repeating itself, yes
DAVIS
Well whose the lucky victim today?
TRU
Candace Aimes, high school classmate
DAVIS
A friend of yours?
TRU
It’s…complicated. Let’s just say I doubt she’ll really appreciate any of my help. She drowned at the reunion, yesterday
DAVIS
Drowned…was there any fluid in her lungs?
TRU
I don’t know, the day rewound before I had a chance to examine anything, so really I’ve got nothing to go on
DAVIS
Well, what about foam?
(Tru regards him curiously)
Drowning victims are often identified by a physical reaction known as foam cone
TRU
You mean when the body goes into rapid shock the body responds with the formation of mucus around the throat and windpipe?
[Flashback of Candace in the water]
No. Totally clean
DAVIS
Sounds like you have a murder to solve
TRU
Wait, you think someone murdered Candace outside the pool, then dumped her body in the water to make it look like a drowning?
DAVIS
It’s a theory
TRU
Okay, I gotta run, but stay close. I may need you tonight
14. INT. Standard Diner Café. DAY.
LINDSAY
I’m so excited! I knew you’d come to the reunion
TRU
Wouldn’t miss it! And you know, I was thinking, let’s just you and me go, together.
(To Luc) You didn’t wanna go did you?
LUC
Miss another round of high school? I’ll survive
HARRISON
Oh, well, I’m going
TRU
You weren’t in our class, Harry
LINDSAY
Yeah…I promised him
TRU
Yeah but you’d have so much more fun without him, trust me
LINDSAY
(To Harrison) Well…you understand, don’t you? We’ll just catch a movie or something tomorrow night
HARRISON (simpering)
No, no, no, but I was so looking forward to this
LUC
Hey, count your blessings Harrison. High school sucked
(Lindsay gets up to leave, Tru goes to follow her but Harrison stops her)
HARRISON
Whoa, whoa, can I talk to you a sec? Um, what are you doing? This is my big date with Lindsay!
TRU
Liar. You just wanna go so you can pick a fight with Keith Morgan
HARRISON (defensive)
What? What are you talking about? That is…
We already went to the reunion didn’t we?
TRU (nodding)
Consider it a heads up
HARRISON
Do you know how annoying it is to have a sibling with your powers?
TRU (smiling)
You’re welcome
Cut to: Shot of city buildings – DAY
15. EXT. Candace’s Apartment Block. DAY.
(Tru waits outside. Candace walks over)
CANDACE
Tru
TRU
Candace. Hey
CANDACE
What a surprise. What are you…? How did you know where I live?
TRU
Uh, you were listed in the reunion directory. Which hasn’t come out yet but I’m on the committee and I helped put it together. Nice building
CANDACE
It’ll do. For now. I don’t mean to be blunt but, what brings you here?
TRU
Well, Candace, do you remember when we used to be friends?
CANDACE
One reunion and everyone gets weepy
TRU
Oh, come on, you remember. We used to ditch classes together, and talk on the phone all the time. We were kind of tight
CANDACE
I know. But I’m through with the past. Because as good as things are for me now, they’re about to get a whole lot better
TRU
Really? How so?
CANDACE
I wrote a novel. It’s called “High School Confidential”. It’s all about life in high school. No-one’s seen it yet, but when they do, it’s gonna be his generation’s “Less Than Zero”
TRU
Wow, that’s great. I’m so happy for you, so please don’t take this the wrong way, but you can’t go to the reunion tonight Candace
CANDACE
Oh, I see. You still have that jealousy problem. Is that why you came here? To keep me away? So I can’t outshine you, again?
TRU
No. It’s just, reunions can get kind of crazy and who knows what could happen tonight?
CANDACE
I know exactly what will happen. You’ll show up with Linda, or Lindy, or…
TRU
Lindsay
CANDACE
…and you’ll be wearing…something she picked out for you. I’m thinking two year old black skirt, faux vintage top. Thanks for stopping by, Tru. It really nice catching up with you
(She walks up to the front door)
But I wouldn’t miss that reunion tonight for the world
Cut to: Shot of the outside of Tru’s apartment block
16. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
LINDSAY
What’s the matter? You seem so tense. Got the pre-reunion jitters?
TRU
I just keep thinking about Candace Aimes. Can you think of anyone who would still be holding a grudge against her?
LINDSAY
Strange question. Uh, let me think. I know, the entire graduating class!
TRU
No, not high school. I mean now, today. Who would still have issues with her?
LINDSAY
Ronnie Clifton might still be a little upset with her after what she did to him
TRU
Why, what did she do to him?
LINDSAY
You never heard Tru, after Candace stole Ronnie from you, they got engaged. And then she left him at the altar. Broke his heart
TRU
Really?
LINDSAY
Yeah. I guess no-one told you because, well you know…
(someone knocks at the door)
TRU
Oh, finally! My pants!
(She goes out to the door and opens it)
BILLY
Hi, I have a delivery for…
TRU
Billy!
BILLY
Tru! Wow, this is, uh…I haven’t seen you for what, like, five years!
TRU
Yeah
BILLY
Uh, is this for you?
TRU
Under my sister’s name, yeah
BILLY
Uh, eight dollars
TRU
Okay… (She looks for the money in her pocket)
BILLY
Are you going to the thing tonight?
TRU
Wouldn’t miss it
BILLY
Hey. You know my favourite part about these reunions? Is listening to everyone out BS-ing each other, trying to make himself sound all big and important
TRU (smiling)
Right
BILLY
I’ll see you tonight, Tru
17. INT. Corridor. NIGHT.
(Tru and Lindsay walk down the corridor towards the desk at the end. Someone hands them a reunion directory)
CANDACE (off-screen)
Billy? Hi!
Cut to: CANDACE
That’s a nice tie…I didn’t know people were still wearing those, you know…in this century
(The girl with the ballot box goes up to Billy, holding out a ballot paper)
BILLY
She’ll always think I’m a geek. You know, I shouldn’t be telling you this, but I’ve developed a software that’s gonna revolutionize downloading. It’ll make the MP3 players obsolete…Tru
(Tru walks past, smiling, knowingly)
TRU
Hey, Billy
18. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
(People dance on the dance floor, loud music plays)
JUDY
Tru! Oh my God, it’s you!
(She engulfs her in a hug)
TRU
Hello Judy
JUDY
Can you believe it? Everyone here in one room, it’s like we never left! Have you seen Larry Cutler yet?
TRU
Good old addicted-to-painkillers Larry, yep
JUDY
And Kenny Lewis…
TRU
Gay
JUDY
And did you hear about Steve Sabitzsky?
TRU
Fired his dad
JUDY
Oh, well, how about…
TRU
Gillian Kaye, with all that plastic surgery? Did you know Candace Aimes could never even swim? It’s been so great catching up with you Judy!
(She walks away)
19. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
(Tru walks up to Ronnie)
TRU
Ronnie, hi
RONNIE
Tru, hey. You look great
TRU
Thanks. It’s weird, all of us being back here, huh?
RONNIE
Yeah, no kidding
TRU
You okay seeing Candace again?
(Ronnie looks over at Candace, she’s dancing with a guy)
RONNIE
Well it didn’t work out. Let’s leave it at that
TRU
She really hurt you. No one could blame you if you wanted to hurt her too
RONNIE
Whoa, Tru, slow down, okay? I mean, what happened with Candace and me, yeah it hurt. But its history. Water under the bridge
TRU
She really broke your heart
RONNIE
Yeah well people say I broke your heart, doesn’t make you wanna hurt me, does it?
(Ronnie walks away)
Cut to: Candace dancing with a guy
20. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
(Tru walks up to Craig)
TRU
Craig?
(He turns around)
TRU
Hey, Tru Davies. Listen, my best friend Lindsay is a really good person
CRAIG
Awesome
TRU
And I know you don’t remember her but, back in high school she put a note in your locker and you never got it, I don’t know why. But just do me a favour, if she brings it up tonight? Just be nice to her. Could you do that for me?
(Tru points out Lindsay, who is grooving on the dance floor)
CRAIG
I guess I can
BILLY
Hey Tru, you got a minute?
(He takes her by the arm and leads her away)
Listen, I want you to know something. I’m not some total loser who works at a dry cleaners
TRU
Look, I didn’t say anything
BILLY
I know. I wouldn’t done everything that I said…See, I had all this venture capital lined up, and it was really cool until the guy pulled the plug at the last minute, and then pfft, no more capital to venture with
TRU
I’m sorry. Whoever the guy was, I’m sure he made a huge mistake
BILLY
Do you know who the guy was? Candace’s dad
TRU
Really?
BILLY
Yeah. Nice, huh?
Cut to: Standard Diner Café as a car passes by
21. INT. Standard Diner Café. NIGHT
LUC
Beer please
HARRISON (coming over)
You made it. I didn’t think you’d show
LUC (shrugging)
Not like we got anything else going on
HARRISON
Yeah, well, thanks to my sister
LUC
You really wanted to go to that reunion didn’t you?
HARRISON
Hey, you wanna know why?
LUC
Lindsay
HARRISON
No. Keith Morgan. See, this guy used to torture me. It started out with little swirlies after gym class. And then it was beatings on a semi-regular basis. And now he’s back in town
LUC
So you wanted to go tonight so you could get…
HARRISON
Two words: Re-venge
(He smiles at Luc, they both drink their beer)
22. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
(Tru walks up to where Candace and Mr Connor are talking)
MR CONNOR
Well they asked me to transfer to another school but I figured I could do more…
TRU
Mind if I cut in?
MR CONNOR
Tru Davies! What a treat
CANDACE
Hi, Tru. Great seeing you. Did you come here stag tonight? No boyfriend?
(Tru doesn’t reply)
That’s a nice outfit. Somehow not what I expected
TRU
Candace, do you mind if I just talk to you for one second?
CANDACE
About what? Why you didn’t want me coming?
(to Mr Connor) Tru tried to convince me that I shouldn’t show, but...I told her. High school’s over. She can relax
(pointing) Oh look, there’s Larry Whitesman. I have to tell him how good he looks with the extra weight
(Tru watches Candace walk over to Larry and hug him dramatically)
MR CONNOR
Don’t let Candace get to you, Tru
TRU
She doesn’t
MR CONNOR
How come you can’t take your eyes off of her?
(He holds out one hand)
How about a dance for an old teacher?
(They start dancing. Candace finishes dancing with Larry and walks away)
MR CONNOR
Look, maybe it’s Candace, or maybe it’s just being back here, but I can tell there’s something on your mind, and I just wanna say that even though you graduated, my office door is still always open to you
TRU
I appreciate it, Mr Connor
(She looks over to where Candace is now dancing with somebody else. A few feet away, Billy and Ronnie are talking together, then walk off)
MR CONNOR
Tru?
(Tru watches as Candace walks off towards the corridor; Billy and Ronnie follow her)
MR CONNOR
Tru, is there something wrong?
TRU
Not if I can help it
(She hurries off after them)
[Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images as they rewind]
23. INT. Corridor. NIGHT.
(Tru hurries down the corridor towards the pool)
24. INT. Pool. NIGHT.
(It is dark and silent)
TRU
Candace? Are you in here?
(Camera pans out to show the pool – Candace isn’t in it. She’s standing by the side)
TRU
Candace!
(Billy and Ronnie run up behind her)
TRU
Watch out!
(Candace screams as they push her into the pool. Tru jumps in and swims over to her. Billy is taking photographs)
BILLY
Priceless. Dude, this was priceless. I’ve been waiting five years for this
RONNIE (encouraging)
Come on, come on, get right in there
BILLY
Tru, what are you doing?
TRU
She can’t swim!
(She reaches Candace, and pulls her back to the side)
TRU (cont’d)
You could have killed her!
RONNIE
Yeah well, it was just a prank okay?
BILLY
Yeah, we thought you hated Candace more than anyone
(Candace coughs and splutters)
TRU
You okay? I think you swallowed some water but you’ll be all right
MR CONNOR
Hey! What the hell is going on here?
BILLY
Nothing, Curtis. I mean, Mr Connor
RONNIE
Yeah, we’re just having some fun
MR CONNOR
Very mature, guys
(Candace is out of the pool, dripping wet. She glares at the boys, who are grinning)
CANDACE
Laugh it up, both of you
(She grabs the camera from Billy)
They told me to meet them here
(She rips the film out and ruins it)
See how funny you think assault charges are
(She thrusts the camera back at Billy)
(To Tru and Mr Connor) You’re both witnesses
TRU
Candace, are you okay?
CANDACE
Back off, Tru. It’s not like you saved my life or anything
MR CONNOR
All right guys, back inside
(They don’t move)
Let’s go!
(They hurry away)
(To Tru) There’s some dryers in the locker room, you might wanna use them
(He leaves too. Tru looks up at the Pool room clock. It reads 8:45pm)
TRU
It’s too early
Cut to: Shot of the Morgue building and front door
25. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(The telephone rings. Davis answers it)
DAVIS
Morgue
TRU (voice-over)
Davis, it’s me
DAVIS
Oh, hey Tru. How’s the reunion? Everyone still alive?
Cut to: TRU walking down the corridor, after having dried herself off
Well, the good news is I saved Candace after she got shoved in the pool
Cut to: DAVIS
Then what’s the bad news?
Cut to: TRU
It was just a prank. Which means her life is still in danger, and the murder’s still on track
Cut to: DAVIS
Well, maybe the pool prank killed Candace on Day One
Cut to: TRU
That’s impossible. The times don’t match. Candace was in the gym at 9:30 and I found her at 10
Cut to: DAVIS
Well something must have changed. What did you do different tonight than last night?
[Flashback of Candace talking to Luc the previous night]
Cut to: TRU
Luc! Candace was talking to him yesterday, and so couldn’t get to the pool. But he didn’t come with me tonight
Cut to: DAVIS
Well that’s it, so your involvement in events can change them. Last night you saved Candace from humiliation, tonight you have to stop her murder. Unfortunately, you’re back to square one on suspects
Cut to: TRU
Looks like it. All right, stay in touch okay? I might need you. This isn’t over
Cut to: Shot of the Standard Diner Café – NIGHT
26. INT. Standard Diner Café. NIGHT.
HARRISON
God, I was just a little runt back then! And this dude put me through a living hell. For years! And I have been waiting since the tenth grade to return the favour. Oh, tonight was gonna be the night, man! But no…my sis has gotta convince Lindsay to leave me at home
LUC
I’m sure she had a good reason
HARRISON
Yeah, when you can do what Tru does, you always have a good reason, right?
LUC
What? What do you mean? What can your sister do?
HARRISON
Well, you know. She’s always looking after little brother
LUC
Well, it’s too bad we can’t just crash the reunion. That’d solve everything
HARRISON
Yeah
(Silence. They both look down at the bottles on the bar, then look at each other)
HARRISON/LUC (in unison)
Let’s crash it
Cut to: Shot of the high school building
27. INT. Main hall. NIGHT.
(Lindsay bobs her head to the music. Then she notices Craig)
LINDSAY
Craig…
(She walks over to him. Before she gets there, a dark-haired boy follows her)
GLENN
Hey, uh, Glenn Carpenter. Can I talk to you for a sec?
LINDSAY
Uh, later, yeah sure. Craig? Craig Burke
CRAIG
Hi Lindsay
LINDSAY
Oh, you remembered! Um, this is gonna sound a little strange, but toward the end of senior year, I left a note in your locker. And…
CRAIG
I never got it
LINDSAY
Oh…
CRAIG
But, let me tell you something, Lindsay. If I had gotten a note from you…I mean, if a girl as beautiful and charming as you had given me one, I’d be touched
LINDSAY
You would?
CRAIG
Yeah, without a doubt. And I would have done something about it too. Who knows where it could have led
(Lindsay laughs)
But as it is, I’m married (he holds up his ring hand)
LINDSAY
Oh, congratulations Craig, that’s great
CRAIG
Yeah, I think so. I think so. But I’m glad you said something tonight. It’s good to reconnect
LINDSAY
It was so good to see you, Craig
28. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
JUDY
There you are! I’ve been looking for you! I’ve told everyone
TRU
Told everyone what?
GIRL (shoving the ballet box at them)
Vote for reunion queen!
TRU
Pass
(She looks at her watch. It reads 9:35pm)
JUDY
About you, Tru. Saving Candace. They all agree you’re a big hero!
(Tru looks over at Candace, who is dancing)
JUDY (cont’d)
But I wish we had Billy’s pictures though! You know, I was talking to…
TRU
Judy, listen, I have got something really important to do and I’m sorry, but I can’t be distracted, okay?
(She is about to walk off when Harrison and Luc clatter in behind her, both drunk, holding each other up)
HARRISON
Tru!
LUC
All right!
HARRISON
Oh, is this a bad time? Because I know how eager you were to have us here tonight!
TRU
Oh, great
LINDSAY
Hey! What are you doing here? I didn’t think you were coming
(She hugs Harrison)
HARRISON
I wasn’t. But then I remembered, I got some business to take care of
(Tru looks over to the dance floor. Candace is still there)
(Harrison taps Luc on the shoulder, pointing as if to say “Later Dude”, and disappears. Tru rolls her eyes)
LUC
Hey. Sorry about the surprise. It seemed like a good idea about half an hour ago
TRU
No, it’s fine
LUC
You sure?
TRU
Yeah, it’s just been kind of a crazy night
LUC
Crazy good or crazy bad?
TRU
That’s the thing, I don’t know yet
LUC
Okay. Why don’t you find me when you figure it out, okay? I’ll be at the bar. Brown jacket (he holds both thumbs up)
JUDY (coming over)
You know, I have my own opinion about Candace
TRU
Judy, I told you now’s not the best time
JUDY
You could have let her drown
TRU
What? You’re kidding, right?
JUDY
You know what, it isn’t fair. Everyone always says Candace has things. She has boyfriends and she has money and she has looks and popularity, but Candace doesn’t have those things. She took them
TRU
What’s that?
JUDY
She took them from people like me. I could have been Prom Queen but Candace took it! Now, you ask me, she deserves everything she gets
TRU
Judy, let’s get some air. Come on, let’s get you out of here
(She tries to take Judy away, but Judy shrugs her off)
JUDY
Why?
GLENN (on the microphone)
Can I have your attention please? We finally have all the ballots in, and it’s now time to announce tonight’s Class of ’99 Five Year Reunion Queen. And tonight, our Queen is…
(Candace straightens her dress and fluffs her hair)
(He looks in the envelope)
…Tru Davies
(People clap and cheer. Tru looks shocked. Girls start pushing her towards the stage)
TRU
No, I can’t. You don’t understand
(Tru gets dragged up onto the stage by Glenn)
TRU
No, no, no...you don’t understand
GLENN
Don’t be shy!
(He places the tiara on her head)
Cut to: LUC (cheering)
Yeah!
Cut to: Stage
GLENN
I think we’d all like to hear a few words?
Cut to: LINDSAY (cheering)
Woo!
Cut to: Candace rolling her eyes and moving away. Judy follows her
Cut to: Tru, staring after them
Cut to: Candace walking through the crowd, Judy following her. They disappear
Cut to: TRU
Excuse me, I gotta go
(She takes the tiara off her head and runs after the disappearing girls)
[Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images as they rewind]
29. INT. Corridor. NIGHT
(Tru runs down the steps, and down the corridor. She stops outside an office door)
TRU
Mr Connor
MR CONNOR (coming to the door)
Tru, you caught me. Grading papers. Why aren’t you inside with the others?
TRU
I need your help
MR CONNOR
What’s the trouble?
TRU
Look, I don’t have time to explain everything, I just need you to listen up. Candace is in danger, I think Judy’s gonna hurt her
MR CONNOR
Look, I know a lot of old feelings can get stirred up at these reunions. But violence? I don’t, I don’t think so
TRU
Normally, I wouldn’t either. But you’re just gonna have to believe me
MR CONNOR
I’ll tell you what. I believe that you believe it. How can I help?
TRU
Have you seen Candace or Judy?
MR CONNOR
No, I haven’t. But…
TRU
All right. I’m gonna need you to do me a favour. Let’s split up. I’ll take this wing, and you go that way, and keep an eye out for either of them. Please don’t ask why
MR CONNOR
That’d be two favours, wouldn’t it?
(He comes out his office and closes the door. Tru runs off in one direction, Mr Connors walks in the other. Camera follows Tru as she rounds a corner, and suddenly sees Judy, leaning against the wall)
TRU
Judy
JUDY
It’s not fair, Tru
TRU
Where’s Candace?
JUDY
I said, it’s not fair
TRU
Okay Judy, now you’re starting to scare me
JUDY
I can’t take it anymore. It’s like high school all over again. Nothing ever changes. First, Candace is Prom Queen. Now you. How come it’s never my turn? How come girls like Candace always win, and girls like me always lose?
TRU
All I can tell you Judy, is things change. I promise. Now help me out, I need to find Candace
JUDY
Why is Candace so important to everybody? To you, to Mr Connor! I’m important too
TRU
What do you mean, Mr Connor?
JUDY
I just saw her. With him
TRU
You just saw them together?
JUDY
Yeah. Like, two minutes ago
(Tru dashes away)
30. INT. Mr Connor’s Office. NIGHT.
(Tru runs down the corridor, then into Mr Connor’s office. She looks around, then down at his desk. On the desk are pages of a novel, on the front it says “High School Confidential by Candace Aimes”)
[Flashback: CANDACE: “I wrote a novel. It’s called High School Confidential”]
(Tru looks at the printer next to the pages of Candace’s book. A piece of paper has just printed out. It reads: “High School Confidential by Curtis Connor”)
31. INT. Swimming Pool. NIGHT.
(Mr Connor and Candace are walking by the poolside)
MR CONNOR
So you’re sure no-one’s seen your novel?
CANDACE
It’s like I’ve been telling you, Mr Connor. No-one’s seen it. Why do you keep asking me that?
MR CONNOR
Just need to be sure
CANDACE
You told me it was no good, that it needed lots of work. Of course I haven’t shown it to anyone. I mean, I was feeling so good about it until I showed it to you. Why’d you wanna meet me here? It’s so creepy
Cut to: Tru, running down the corridor
32. INT. Swimming Pool. NIGHT.
MR CONNOR
I’ve been trying to write a novel for years with no success…watching students like you graduate, move on, pass me by
CANDACE
I thought you’d be proud of me
MR CONNOR
Oh, I am. Your first try, you write a book that I have been trying to put to paper for years
Cut to: Tru running down the corridor, past a clock. It reads 9:59pm
33. INT. Swimming Pool. NIGHT.
MR CONNOR
I know my limits, Candace. The only way that I will write a book as great as yours is if I make it my own
CANDACE (laughs)
That’s impossible
MR CONNOR (taking off his glasses)
Not if no-one’s seen it. Not if no-one knows
CANDACE
Oh, God…no-one knows. And the only way for you to steal my novel from me…
MR CONNOR
Shh shh shh shh. I am so sorry, Candace
(He moves forward, gripping her head, one hand over her mouth)
(The lights flash on in the pool room. Mr Connor lets Candace go. They both look up at Tru)
MR CONNOR
Tru, what are you doing here?
TRU
I was looking for Candace. Just wanted to tell her how much I loved her book. See, Mr Connor, the only way this works for you is if nobody’s seen it. So now you’ve got a choice: You can kill Candace and put your name on the book…but you’re gonna have to kill me too
(Mr Connor shakes his head slightly. Candace moves quickly over to Tru)
MR CONNOR
You won’t tell anyone about this will you?
TRU
Not if you resign tomorrow and turn yourself in. You know, it’s a shame. School’s gonna lose a good teacher. You used to be my favourite, Mr Connor. But I guess things change, huh?
(Tru and Candace walk away. Camera shows the Pool clock, which reads 10:01pm)
MR CONNOR (head in hands)
Oh my God…
34. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
(Music plays loudly. Glenn walks to the microphone, holding the tiara)
GLENN
Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of 99, please welcome back our Queen, Tru Davies
(Everyone clap and cheer as Tru makes her way to the stage)
Cut to: Candace, clapping but scowling
Cut to: Luc, clapping and smiling, Harrison behind him raising his arms aloft as if he’s won it
HARRISON
That’s my sister!
(Glenn places the tiara on Tru’s head)
TRU
Hi, everyone. Um, for those of you who remember me, you know I’m not too good at giving speeches. But, uh, here goes. High school was a time that pretty much sucked for most of us. Let’s face it, it was all about being picked on or getting left out. But tonight I think we get the chance to change that. We can let bygones be bygones
(Harrison and Luc clink beer bottles)
TRU (cont’d)
This tiara… (she takes it off) … means a lot to some people. But it doesn’t belong to me. Um, Judy? Judy Rogers. You know everything about everyone in this entire class
Cut to: Judy, looking very shocked
TRU
And you’ve been waiting five years for this. So that makes you queen in my book. Why don’t you come up here and remind us how great you are?
(Everyone bursts into applause and cheers)
(Shot of Candace, unsure what to do, then she starts slow-clapping)
(Tru places the tiara on Judy’s head and kisses her cheek. Judy’s friends join her on the platform, hugging her)
JUDY
Thank you…for once, I’m speechless
35. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
(Glenn walks up to Lindsay)
GLENN
Lindsay, hi. Glenn…again
LINDSAY
Oh, hi
GLENN
Um, this might sound crazy, but there’s something I’ve always wanted to tell you. I always thought you were the most beautiful girl in school. And then, you left that note in my locker…
LINDSAY (open-mouthed)
I left that note in your locker?
GLENN
That note changed my life
LINDSAY
It did?
GLENN
It made me realise one very important thing. If I couldn’t have feelings for you, I couldn’t have feelings for any girl
LINDSAY
Wait a minute, um, are you telling me that my note made you realise that you’re gay?
GLENN (smiling)
That note made me gay
LINDSAY (laughs)
Oh
GLENN
And let me tell you something, come tenth year reunion, that tiara is mine!
LINDSAY (laughing)
Ooh
36. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT.
LINDSAY
Oh God, what a night. My note turned one guy into a liar, another one, um, gay
TRU
Power of the written word
LINDSAY
And how was your night?
TRU
Oh, typical.
LINDSAY
Oh, don’t get me started on Harrison either
TRU
Oh my God, Harrison…I totally forgot. He didn’t try to pick a fight with Keith Morgan, did he?
(There is laughter from a few feet away. Lindsay and Tru look over: Harrison, Luc and Keith are arm in arm, laughing and joking)
KEITH
Oh, now I remember you!
LINDSAY
They’ve been like that all night. Thought they were gonna fight but then Luc just started laughing at the two of them. Now they’re the Three-freaking-Amigos. Lucky me, huh?
(Tru spots Candace)
TRU
I’ll be right back. There’s just something I have to take care of
(Lindsay looks over to where Harrison and Keith are playing air guitar, and grimaces)
37. INT. Main Hall. NIGHT
TRU
Candace, how are you holding up?
CANDACE
I’m fine. Why?
TRU
I was just wondering, after the Ordeal you went through…
CANDACE
Tru, I don’t need your pity
TRU
It’s not pity, Candace. Its friendship
CANDACE
To be honest, I don’t need that either
TRU
Candace, we used to be best friends. I know things change, we’re not friends now. But maybe that could change too. I know I’d really like that. What do you say?
(They smile at each other)
CANDACE
Sorry, Tru. Some things change. Some things never will
(She moves away. Tru looks disappointed)
LUC
Hey
TRU
Hi. I’m glad you’re still here
LUC
Yeah?
TRU
Yeah
LUC
Then how about a dance?
TRU (smiling)
I thought you’d never ask
(They start dancing to Vaughan Penn’s “If I Could See You”)
LUC
So tonight must have brought back some memories huh?
TRU
Yeah, a few
[Camera fades into Tru’s memory. It’s the same gym they are standing in now. The younger Tru and Candace run in, wearing their gym things. They start stretching, to warm down]
CANDACE
You know who you should take to the prom? Ronnie Clifton
TRU
He’s so out of my league
CANDACE
No way. He’d be lucky to have you
TRU
You mean it?
CANDACE
What are best friends for?
TRU
Let’s never change, okay?
CANDACE
We’ll be wrinkly old best friend ladies, together – forever
(They slap hands, and, arm-in-arm, walk out of the gym)
[Flash back to the present. Tru watches Candace, as she stops at the gym door. She hugs Luc tighter, as Candace looks at her, and then Candace leaves the gym]
[Fade to Black]
[END CREDITS]
